Community
Serving approximately 130 square miles, the Axtell Public School provides the educational needs of students grades 6-12 of the Axtell and Summerfield communities. Located along Nebraska-Kansas state line, students attending Axtell Public School represent a diversified economic base. While the setting is rural and agrarian, families in Axtell and Summerfield work in such areas as: construction, accounting and financial management, media distribution and repair, construction supply assembly, banking, farming, agricultural support business, as well as several others.
School
Axtell Public School provides a comprehensive four-year high school and three-year middle school. Axtell Public School first opened in 1888. The current facility was constructed in 1942. In 2001 an addition to the school was completed adding a new gymnasium, distance learning room, food service kitchen and cafeteria. In 1980, Summerfield High School closed and those students in the upper grades began attending Axtell High School. In turn, Axtell School elementary begun and have continued attending Summerfield Elementary since that time. The Axtell School has been involved with two consolidations over its history. In 1966, the Axtell, Bern and Summerfield districts joined to create Unified School District #488. Then again in 2010, U.S.D. #488 joined with U.S.D #441 “Sabetha/Wetmore” to form Unified School District #113 “Prairie Hills.” The board of education office is located at Sabetha, KS. Axtell Public is a Kansas Department of Education accredited school.
Curriculum
The academic program is organized on seven-period schedule. Students in grades 8-12 can earn up to 7 credits per semester. Students attend seven 50-minute class periods each day, as well as a 34 minute seminar period and a 25 minute lunch break. Grades 6 and 7 are taught as self-contained classrooms.
Courses offered to high school students include: English I, II & III, College English I & II, Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Math Concepts, Trigonometry, Precalculus, College Algebra, General Science, Biology, Anatomy, Chemistry, Physics, Science Projects, World History, American History, American Government, Computer Applications, Multimedia, In-House Design, Accounting, Agriscience, Plant & Soil Science, Animal Science, Ag Mechanics, Advanced Ag. Mechanics, Ag Internship, Human Growth & Development, Career & Community Connections, Family Studies, Nutrition & Wellness, Physical Education I (including Health), Physical Education II, Toning/Plyometrics/Sculpting, Career Explorations and Teachers Aid. Additionally, juniors and seniors have a variety of online college courses they can take through Hutchinson Community College for dual credit.

Rank and GPA Calculation
The evaluation of student progress and determination of GPA, honor roll, class rank, and the designation of valedictorian and salutatorian will be based on a 4-point system, per semester (see above).
