Cosmosphere Presentation a Success
Wetmore, KS- On Monday, October 3rd, 2011 the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center came to Wetmore Academic Center for a “Living in Space” show. The entire school was excited to hear about how astronauts live in space.
“Living in Space, “ a new multimedia presentation from the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center is a show that looks at a day of the life of an astronaut. It includes fun facts and scientific demonstrations.
Wetmore Academic Center was the fiftieth show that was been held so far. The science educators for the shows are Jonathan and Stephanie Spurgeon. When asked, “What do you enjoy best about your job?” Jonathan Spurgeon replied by saying “Well, it doesn’t really feel like a job!”
“I love hearing the children’s’ reactions and the traveling is amazing!” agreed Stephanie Spurgeon. The couple travel from coast to coast, and do approximately three shows a day.
During the show, students learned a great deal. They learned why an astronaut floats, what the space food is like, and how astronauts use the bathroom in space. The presentation also included information about the various space camps that the Cosmosphere offers.
One of the demonstrations was building a makeshift rocket. The students were amazed at how the Spurgeon’s could make a big water jug fly with just a little gas and some fire.
“The show was really cool, but the rocket was probably the best part and I learned a lot!” Rachel Bloom, a seventh grader at Wetmore Academic Center, said.
