Instruction Support Staff and Paraprofessional Biographies

Sabetha Elementary School is fortunate to have several people working as Instructional Support Staff  (ISS) alongside the certified classroom teachers.  Their duties include providing instruction to students as part of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports program the building has in place to provide differentiated levels of instruction for students for part of their math and part of their reading instruction.  Additionally, the special education teachers have the support of several paraprofessional teachers (Para).  Here are the professional biographies of these staff members:

Sue Rokey, ISS

Suzann Plattner has been involved in education for over twenty five years, primarily as a regular education kindergarten teacher. She is currently employed as a part time MTSS Instructional Support Staff teacher. Mrs. Plattner graduated from Washburn University with a B.S. in Elementary Education. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, traveling, helping her husband on the farm, and spending time visiting her children, their spouses and her grandchildren!

 

Lisa Baumgartner, ISS

Mrs. Baumgartner has been working at SES as a part of the Instructional Support Staff team since 2013. Prior to coming to USD 113, Mrs. Baumgartner taught elementary school at B and B. She grew up in Marysville and graduated from Marysville High School.  She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Kansas State University. She later earned her teaching endorsement from Peru State College.  Mrs. Baumgartner currently lives in Sabetha with her husband, Dennis. They have two grown daughters, Katelyn and Taylor.  She enjoys spending time with her family, dehydrating excess produce, doing Zumba, and everything Disney.

 

Ann Kess, ISS

Mrs. Kess has been working at SES as Instructional Support Staff since 2016. From 2000-2015 she held the same job in the Chandler Unified School Dist. in Arizona. Mrs. Kess grew up in Morrill and graduated from Sabetha High School. Mrs. Kess now resides in Sabetha and works for USD 113 and Lakeside Terrace as a med aide. Visiting kids, grandkids, and great grandkids in Arizona is a favorite thing to do in the summer.

 

Susan Leiker, ISS

Mrs. Leiker began working at SES in 1981 as a classroom teacher.  She then retired from her classroom position after 34 years, to become an MTSS Instructional Support Teacher in 2016. Bringing classroom experience to her new MTSS position has been beneficial and rewarding at the same time.  Mrs. Leiker graduated from Hoisington High School in 1977 and moved on to Fort Hays State University, graduating  in 1981. She has completed many post graduate hours and classes to further her career and keep current with the latest in teaching techniques. Mrs. Leiker and her husband Doug, (also a retired teacher from SHS), moved to Sabetha in 1981. They have two daughters. Greta Heiman and her husband Matt, live and work here in Sabetha, and Hillary and her husband Adam live and work in Lawrence, KS. They have 5 grandchildren from the two families. Doug and Susan enjoy spending time with their children and grandchildren and also stay active following sporting events at SHS. They both also enjoy running and outdoor activities, and attend The First United Methodist Church.

 

Dee Kramer, ISS

Mrs. Kramer has been in the position of ISS since 2013. Prior to this position she worked in all kitchens at USD 113 preparing food for students.  She loves working with students and enjoys seeing the progress they make through their education. Mrs. Kramer grew up near Hiawatha and graduated from Hiawatha High School.  She received an Associate’s Degree in Science at Washburn University in medical records.  She worked at Saint Francis Hospital for two years before she married her sweetheart and returned to Fairview to live. Mrs. Kramer now lives in Sabetha with her husband, Jeff and their four children, Bryce, Trevor, Rachel, & Mitchel.  In her spare time she enjoys going to all of her kids sporting events, school activities, spending time with her family, friends & shopping.

 

Kelli Hartter, ISS

Mrs. Hartter has been at SES as part of the instructional support staff since 2006. She was born and raised in Seneca, Go Trojans and Raiders! She and her husband, Tyran and I have two sons, who are both Bluejays. In her spare time she attempt to play golf well, loves to watch the NFL and enjoys being outdoors.

 

Martha Pearson, ISS

Mrs. Pearson joined the Sabetha Elementary School family as an Instructional Support Staff in August of 2018.  Previous to this position at SES, Mrs. Pearson had been assisting the community at Garrett’s Country Mart when they moved here in 2006.  Working with children and being able to serve or help others is one of Martha’s passions.   Mrs. Pearson grew up in rural South Dakota and graduated from Gettysburg Public High School in Gettysburg, SD.  She received a degree Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education with a Middle School Endorsement from Concordia University, Seward, NE in 2000.   Mrs. Pearson & her husband Shaun moved to Linn, Kansas where she taught grades 3-5 in a self contained classroom at Linn Lutheran Schools from 2000-2006.  Martha and Shaun then moved to Sabetha in 2006. In addition to being employed by Garrett’s Country Mart she also worked as a Library Aide/ Para at the Bern School from 2007-2012.  Mrs. Pearson and her husband Shaun live in Sabetha with their three children, Paul, Naomi, and Lily.   When she has free time, Mrs. Pearson enjoys spending time with family and friends, going to her children’s events, cooking/baking, crafting, reading, and being outdoors.

 

Marcia Oom, ISS

Mrs. Oom has been working at the Sabetha Elementary School as an Instructional Support Staff Para since 2015. She was born and raised in Sabetha. Always a Bluejay! Mrs. Oom is married to Rob and has 3 grown daughters. Kristina and her husband live in Meriden, Bobbi and Michelle and their husbands live in Sabetha. Between the three girls, she is blessed with five awesome grandchildren. Mrs. Oom likes to keep busy throughout the year going to her grandkids' activities, spending time with her family and camping. Mrs. Oom has found working with children to be so fulfilling, and she loves to watch the kids grow and learn.

 

Susan Chandler, ISS

Susan began working for the school district in 2008 at the Wetmore location.  She transferred to Sabetha in 2009. Susan and her husband, Darrin moved to Sabetha in 1997 from Northwestern Kansas.  A year later their only son, Scott was born. Susan’s first job in Sabetha was working for Doctor Yulich.  She has also worked at the Sabetha Community Hospital and owned her own business - Videos to Go. Among her hobbies are reading, camping and traveling with her family.

 

Rita Menold, ISS

Mrs. Menold began working at Sabetha Elementary School in August 2016.  She is a part of the Instructional Support Staff and loves working with students, and watching them grow and learn.  Mrs. Menold and her husband, Trent, live on a farm north of Sabetha. They have four children - Braden, Taylor, Cole, and Kami.  Rita and her family attend the Bern Apostolic Christian church. In her spare time, she finds herself baking, enjoying the outdoors, scrapbooking and spending time with her family.

 
Julie Shafer, ISS  

Ruth Oom, Para

Ruth Oom is married to Mike Oom.  She was born and raised in Southampton, PA, 20 miles NE of Philadelphia.  Her family moved to Sabetha on Christmas eve 1987.  She has six daughters giving her a house divided . . . K-State: 4, KU: 2.  Their homes are Sabetha, Kansas City, Littleton, CO, Montery, CA and Australia.  Mrs. Oom loves being Nana to 7 grandsons and one granddaughter.  Mrs. Oom started her job as a special ed para in August 1995, and says, "The Lord has given me the best job ever!"

 

Kathy Herl, Para

Kathy Herl was born and raised in Topek, KS and moved to Sabetha in 1995 with her husband, Paul.  They have two children.  She enjoys spending time with her family, horses, scrapbooking and shopping.

 

Janet Strahm, Para

Janet Strahm and her husband Dean live in Sabetha.  They have four children and six grandchildren.  Her goal as a para is to help each child she comes in contact with have a positive school experience and become prepared for their next step in life.  She enjoys being with the kids at school, but when she's not there, her favorite things to do are spend time with family, cook, read and work in her yard and garden.

 

Kim Harrell, Para

Mrs. Harrell was a preschool teacher for eleven years prior to working at SES as a para.  She grew up in Kansas City, KS and moved to the Sabetha area in 1989 with her husband Russ.  They have three children and 8 grandchildren.  In her spare time, Mrs. Harrell enjoys traveling, reading, crafting and spending time with her family.

 

Tiffany Menold, ISS

"Miss Tiffany'" has worked as a para in the preschool class at Sabetha Elementary School since 2018. Prior to coming into the USD 113 district, she was employed by the Holton Special Educaton COOP and worked in the SPED Preschool at SES for three years. 

Tiffany grew up in the Sabetha area and graduated from Sabetha High School. She attended Kansas State University for a year and a half before getting married. 

Tiffany and her husband live near Morrill with their five children, Kellen, Nate, Kade, Lanie, and Jake. Some of the activities she enjoys are, spending time with family and friends, reading, being outdoors, and playing the piano.
